Women’s Human Rights Education Institute 2016 Applications

Are you a women’s human rights defender?  Do you want to increase your understanding of women’s human rights, and learn how to use the UN Human Rights system and CEDAW, the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, to support your activism?

Join other international activists, scholars, community workers, NGO representatives, lawyers and educators in learning about women’s human rights education and activism at the Women’s Human Rights Education Institute (WHRI), a collaboration between the Centre for Women’s Studies in Education/University of Toronto, and the Fundación Justicia y Género of Costa Rica.

Applications now open for the following 2016 programs:

International Women’s Human Rights Education Institute Intensive (August 8-19, 2016 Toronto)

Overview:  The WHRI focuses on understanding and utilizing the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and also looks more broadly at the herstory of the International Women’s Human Rights movement, human rights training and education, feminist frameworks of analysis, self-care and activist sustainability, and with a special focus on the intersections between CEDAW and Indigenous women’s rights, women and peacebuilding, and other issues of intersectional discrimination faced by women .

The program includes 3 weeks online learning pre-course (from your home), 2 weeks intensive in Toronto, and an online learning post-course and submission of post-institute plans.

The “CEDAW for Change” Institute (June 20-25, 2016 Costa Rica)

This one week module held in English will focus on understanding and utilizing the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as a tool for activism, feminist analysis and awareness-raising on women’s human rights.

The program will be held on the beautiful campus of the UN University for Peace, in Ciudad Colon, close to the capital of San Jose.

We will also be offering a Spanish-language “CEDAW for Change” in September in Costa Rica in collaboration with the Fundacion Justicia y Genero.  This training will be designed specifically for administrators of justice.  More details will be available soon on our website (www.learnwhr.org).
